SQL Server Edition Packaging

SQL Server is packaged in a Russian-doll fashion, with a higher-level edition’s features being a superset of lower editions.

The illustration summarizes Enterprise, Business Intelligence (BI), and Standard edition features across versions 2019, 2017, 2016, 2014, and 2012. The distribution of features for SQL Server 2016 assumes use of service pack 1 (SP1) and Power BI Report Server. BI edition was eliminated in the 2016 line-up.
