For licensing purposes, Microsoft uses the term multitenant to describe architectures where server hardware at a service provider is shared among multiple customers, but in such a way that customers cannot access each other’s data. The opposite of multitenant is “dedicated,” meaning architectures where servers at a service provider are devoted to one customer’s exclusive use. (Dedicated scenarios are governed by Microsoft’s outsourcer licensing rules.)
